Tablet Pen
[info]liret wrote in [info]neworleans
Does anyone know where I can find a replacement pen for a wacom tablet? I tried Walmart and Radio Shack. I know I'll probably have to order it online, but getting one quick without having to pay for fast shipping would be nice.

So you can borrow video games from the library now??? YES.

Japan Fest at NOMA Nov. 8
[info]tenshuaozora wrote in [info]neworleans
Hi all:

I know everyone's recovering still from VooDoo and Halloween, but I thought I'd promote the Japan Fest being held this Sunday, November 8 at the NO Museum of Art at City Park. The event starts at 10 am with an opening ceremony on the steps of the museum. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $4 for children.

This promotion is somewhat shameless, as I'm demonstrating iaido from 3:00 - 3:20. Please come join us.

Keigo Resources
[info]silverstardom wrote in [info]japanese
Hi,
I am currently studying for the JLPT, and I realized that I have a sore lack of good resources on Keigo. I was wondering if anyone has any good websites or books to recommend? Keigo is really difficult. :/

Thanks for your help in advance! :)

Takashimaya (Part 2 of 2)
[info]ripdiet
My mom and I loved this particular stall in the Takashimaya food basement. It sold chinese food that were all freshly made/assembled. Definitely try their dumplings (which had kuchay and sweetened radish ?? filling). I was able to take pictures of the lady making popiah (very similar to what we have locally as chinese lumpia, but way spicier) and a tikoy-like dessert rolled in nuts.

Photobucket
Making Popiah.

Photobucket
She reinforces the roll with a strip of lumpia wrapper so it wouldn't cave in when she rolled it.
The cute thing about is it she uses a shredder to add pieces of egg! Like it was cheese or something.

Photobucket
She pierces a small chunk off a gelatinous white mass in a pan.
It's sort of like tikoy, but more malleable.

Photobucket
She cuts it up in bite-size pieces and rolls everything in chopped nuts.

Photobucket
Puts it in a container, and hands it over to you along with a few toothpicks to enjoy!

It's very similar to what you can get here as "Peanut Tikoy". I like that you could get it here fresh.

i can't count how many times i saw this - large bird gliding between spinning blades - but never saw a hit.

when do we say enough is enough and alter OUR consumption to protect what's important? or will countless lives (inconsequential, according to many) be lost because we're too selfish to say enough is enough?

Vica got married!
[info]feralbirdgirl
weee, so it looks like VICA got married! nikki seems like a great gal - any gal who is into salamanders and skinks is awesome in my book ;-)

right, so the zoo has been tolerably fair. yesterday's all-day orientation meeting was horrific. a slow headache turned into agony by mid afternoon and i went to bed shortly after seven and woke up with my alarm at 6:15 - looks like the new girl (mammals) and the new guy (fish) are delightful, if eccentric folks. who am i to judge? ;-)

anyway, other than monkey poo in the eye, our sickly conure is ALL better, our dead eclectus was kidney failure, and our old capybara is slowly but surely being pondered for humane permanent sleepings =/

tired, so tired, but hanging in there.

Wish I'd thought of this.

The setting: House of Shock. The stage show.

Before the assembled mass, a Demon and an Angel are fighting over the souls of the audience.

The angel cries, and screams to those watching- "Who is your champion? WHO DO YOU CHOOSE?!?"

With triumph in his voice, a true New Orleanian replies with the only possible answer.

"DREW BREES!"

Bike routes?
[info]ben_iarwain wrote in [info]neworleans
Hey folks,

I need some help planning my bike route from work to school, and from school to home. I've tried it a few times and it is NOT working out so far...

I need to get from the CBD (Camp and Poydras) to UNO Lakefront (Elysian Fields and Leon Simon), leaving at 4pm on certain weekdays.

Then I need to get from UNO Lakefront to Magazine Street and Harmony at around 7 pm on certain weekdays.

Any tips? Anyone? Anyone?

Rule #2: All pictures MUST BE PLACED BEHIND AN LJ-CUT. Small, medium, large images, it doesn't matter, they go behind an LJ-Cut

If you don't use a cut, your post will be deleted. No more warnings. It's too bad, too, since some of the posts could be helpful to someone, somewhere. If we allow one small non-profit logo to go through, it opens it up to all other images. So, just use an LJ-cut, folks.

Exploring the Female Consciousness in Boys' Love Manga
[info]seiret wrote in [info]japanese
A few months ago, around the start of the first semester, I blogged about writing this academic paper on boys' love. A lot of people extended their help, and because of that I managed to get a 1.0 (the highest grade my university gives) on both the paper and as my final grade. This is my very first paper as a student pursuing a master's degree, so I'm really very happy that my hard work earned a good grade. I'm now more confident in applying for a scholarship. :)

As to why I chose this topic, there was a time in my life when I consumed boys' love media as if it were oxygen. ^^;; I am somewhat glad that's over. Before I wrote the paper, it had been a long time since I read BL manga, and it only came to mind because of well, Eiki Eiki, who piqued my interest for being an ojousan and a BL mangaka at the same time. It was rather strange for me to see the grandchild of a former prime minister to choose that which is queer as her subject of expertise. It made me think of how Japanese society views this phenomenon. At the same time, I had lingering unresolved issues about BL, particularly about its difference from gay literature. My main objective in writing this, therefore, is neither to promote nor problematize, but simply to create in its readers self-aware consumers of popular culture.

As a way of showing my gratitude, I uploaded my paper entitled Exploring the Female Consciousness in Boys' Love Manga: The Real, The Ideal, and the Despised Self to the websites linked below. Feel free to send me your comments and criticisms -- they will help me become a better writer. I also hope that this might be of some help to scholars who would like to take on the subject in the future. Again, thank you very much!

0105. Growing The Hallway
[info]dreamofboat
I entered a friend's house to see that their hallways were no longer tiled, but covered in tiny water plants with red leaves. In some places, taller plants stood up, green and black, and the entire plane of flora shifted and shivered with your footsteps. The taller plants curled and responded to touch as if they were some kind of animals. Easily, I thought, we'd solved the problem of their flooding hallways.

Upon entering the kitchen, I could feel that I wasn't welcome there. Her mom sat at the table giving me a blank, borderline offended look. I had been text messaging both her mother and my friend herself, but supposed I'd only mention my late-night visit to my friend. I went ahead into my friend's room. She then showed me a large flat peice of driftwood and the seat of a slatted chair that had been bolted to the ceiling. I told her of the other chair-seats that I'd found, one being more curved, with lots of bolts on it. After a moment, I was alone in the large hard room.

Singapore: Takashiyama (Part 1 of 2)
[info]ripdiet
The best part about going on a trip is the guiltless eating. When you're on vacation, calories don't count! When I was in Singapore I loved loved loved going to the food halls/food courts of the different malls. (And boy, do they have a lot of malls in Singapore!) I really liked the one in Takashimaya because it was near where we were billeted and it had a lot of interesting stalls.

Photobucket
Pop Doh Donut House! It had the best cream filled donuts! The cream to donut ratio was probably 3:1.

Photobucket
My favorite is the oreo choco one which had the oreo-flavored cream inside and the brown one with the white swirl, which had a vanilla cream filling inside. These were 5 for 2.80. Definitely not bad!

Photobucket
My dad loves bread and pastries, so we got a few for him to sample. I loved the Kaya croissant.

Photobucket
There was a stall that sold machang with all sorts of filling and in different sizes. I wanted to try a few but I had too much rice already.

Photobucket
Pretty and yummmy-looking gelato!

Photobucket
This is a stall that sold all things Durian. I think Durian's a popular flavor in Singapore. Almost all of the dessert items had a Durian (or Mango or Pineapple) option. It's an acquired taste, though. The only durian item I like is Durian chips from Bangkok.

Photobucket
A dried fruit and nut bar that would put our local House of Nuts to shame. I wish we had the variety here. You can get peeled squash seeds!

I have two other favorite stalls, which I'll write about in a separate post.

Takashiyama is located in Ngee Ann City, along Orchard Road in Singapore.
